The commuter fee, introduced in 2017, was an initiative to increase non-residence student programming at SMC. Due to its name, students at SMC were concerned that this fee was being charged to commuters and residence students, and this prompted numerous concerns over transparency and fairness.
Over the past 6-7 weeks, SMCSU has been meeting with the President's Office and investigating this fee and its allocation. We are committed to ensuring financial transparency and speaking up about the matters that concern you, the students. Office of the Dean of Students has recently "paused" the Mentorship and Commuter Coordinator programs that were being offered at St. Mike's for the upcoming academic year. These programs serve a critical purpose for student support as well as nurturing the future leaders of SMC.
As such, SMCSU has decided to temporarily absorb these two roles as hired positions through the Mentorship Commissioner role and the Commuter Commissioner role.
