Our proposed increase is $1.55/sem. Cheaper than a cup of mediocre coffee! But, this funding will go a LONG way in supporting the council, the students and our community as a whole.
Currently, our councillors work 6-14 hours each week to deliver high quality programming and support for our student body. However, these students are currently not compensated for their work at all. By providing councillors with an honourarium, we are able to hold them accountable for the work that they do!
Also, considering all the work that goes into being a councillor, being unpaid also presents a financial barrier for any students interested in becoming a councillor. We hope to reduce that barrier and financially support students who may want to run in the SMCSU election!
Executive Councillors (President and Vice-President) will get $1250 for their entire term, whereas all other Councillors will get $750 for their entire term.
SMCSU has had an unprecedented rise in student engagement this year. To make up for it, we have increased our offerings of skate rentals, printing services, office supplies and club funding. However, with our current levy, we cannot support more growth or student clubs.
SMCSU hopes to spend the money on more skates + programming for our ice rink, more ink and paper for our printer (to continue our free printing offering!). Most importantly, we hope to use the money to fund student clubs and student projects. Many recognized clubs did not receive significant funding this year due to the minimal funds available- we hope to change that for future years!
The Voting Days for the SMCSU Referendum has been delayed to Saturday February 22 to Monday February 24 due to technical difficulties with the voting system. In-person voting stations will be up at Brennan Hall and Kelly Library on Monday February 24!
